Solving Overbite Issues with Invisalign in Shepperton

What an overbite really is, why it matters beyond looks, and how modern Invisalign can correct many cases without fixed braces.

An overbite — where your upper front teeth sit noticeably over your lower ones — is one of the most common bite issues we see. A small overbite is normal and even desirable, but a deep or excessive overbite can cause problems that go well beyond appearance. The good news is that many overbites can now be corrected using Invisalign rather than traditional fixed braces, which makes the treatment much more discreet and comfortable.

This post explains what an overbite actually is, why it matters, when Invisalign is the right tool for the job, and what treatment realistically involves.

What Is an Overbite?

Your bite has two dimensions worth understanding:

  • Overbite — how much your upper front teeth cover your lower front teeth vertically (top-to-bottom overlap)
  • Overjet — how far your upper front teeth stick out horizontally in front of your lower teeth

People often use "overbite" loosely to mean both, but they're different problems with different solutions. A "deep bite" (excessive overbite) means your upper teeth cover far more of your lower teeth than they should — sometimes almost completely hiding them. A "protruding" bite (excessive overjet) means the top teeth stick out significantly.

Both can occur together, and Invisalign can often address both — but the treatment planning is quite different for each.

Why an Overbite Matters (Beyond Appearance)

A significant overbite isn't just a cosmetic issue. Left uncorrected, it can cause:

Uneven tooth wear

Because the front teeth are meeting at abnormal angles, they wear faster and unevenly. Over years, this creates flattened, chipped or shortened front teeth — a look that ages the smile prematurely.

Damage to the lower teeth or gums

In a deep bite, the lower front teeth can actually bite into the gum tissue behind the upper front teeth, causing recession, sensitivity and even tissue damage over time.

Jaw strain and TMJ problems

An imbalanced bite forces the jaw joint to compensate. Over years this can cause clicking, muscle fatigue, morning jaw ache and, in some cases, chronic TMJ pain.

Speech and eating quirks

Severe overbites can affect how easily you bite through certain foods (biting into an apple, for example) and occasionally affect speech clarity.

Grinding and headaches

Bite issues are one of the driving factors in nocturnal grinding. That in turn causes tooth wear, cracks in fillings, and morning headaches.

Addressing the overbite early — in adulthood as well as in teenagers — prevents these problems compounding.

How Invisalign Corrects an Overbite

Invisalign uses a series of clear, custom-made aligners that gently move your teeth into a planned final position. To correct an overbite specifically, Invisalign relies on a combination of techniques:

1. Tooth intrusion

Small, tooth-coloured "attachments" (raised bumps of composite bonded to specific teeth) allow the aligners to push down — or "intrude" — the upper and/or lower front teeth. Reducing the vertical overlap is often the key movement in deep-bite correction.

2. Levelling the bite curve

Adult bites often have an exaggerated curve (called the curve of Spee) that contributes to deep bite. Invisalign can flatten this curve gradually across many aligners, opening up the bite as it goes.

3. Precision cuts for elastics

For cases where jaw position needs adjusting — pulling the lower jaw forward slightly, for example — small cuts in the aligners allow you to hook elastics between the upper and lower arches. Elastics are worn during the day and evening and provide the gentle, sustained force needed to shift bite relationships.

4. Precision "bite ramps"

Small ridges built into the aligners at the back of the upper front teeth stop you biting fully into the aligners in the front, encouraging the bite to open. This is particularly effective in deep-bite correction.

Modern Invisalign has genuinely improved at addressing overbite issues over the past decade. Many cases that would once have required fixed braces can now be treated with clear aligners — but not all cases.

When Invisalign Works Well — and When It Doesn't

Invisalign is well-suited to:

  • Mild to moderate deep bite in adults
  • Overbite combined with mild crowding or spacing
  • Overjet reduction of a few millimetres
  • Patients who will wear the aligners for the required 22 hours a day and use elastics reliably when needed

Invisalign is often not the best option for:

  • Very severe deep bites in growing children or teenagers, where jaw growth modification may be more appropriate
  • Cases where the underlying issue is skeletal (jaw size or position) rather than dental — these may need orthodontic surgery in addition to alignment
  • Patients who won't commit to consistent wear — aligners only work when they're in your mouth
  • Very complex bite discrepancies where fixed braces give the orthodontist finer control over specific tooth movements

An honest assessment matters. At your consultation, we'll take a full 3D scan of your teeth and use Invisalign's ClinCheck software to plan the exact movements required. If the case falls outside what Invisalign can reliably deliver, we'll tell you — and, where appropriate, refer you to a specialist orthodontist for fixed braces or combined treatment.

Realistic Treatment Timelines

Timelines vary based on the complexity of the case, but rough averages look like this:

  • Mild overbite (up to 2mm correction): 6–9 months, 20–40 aligners
  • Moderate deep bite: 9–15 months, 40–60 aligners
  • Complex cases with elastics and significant attachments: 15–24 months, 60+ aligners

Aligners are typically changed every 1–2 weeks, and check-ups happen every 6–10 weeks. At the end of active treatment, retainers are essential to maintain the result — teeth naturally want to drift back if not held in place, and this is true for any orthodontic treatment, not just Invisalign.

What Everyday Life Looks Like on Invisalign

  • 22 hours a day of wear — you take the aligners out only to eat, drink hot or coloured drinks, brush and floss
  • Cleaning is straightforward — brush the aligners with cool water and a soft brush; avoid hot water (it distorts them)
  • Speech adjusts within days — a slight lisp for the first 2–3 days is normal and passes quickly
  • Attachments are subtle — most people won't notice them unless they're very close up
  • Elastics take a few days to get used to — they're not painful, just a mild pressure

Most adults find Invisalign considerably more compatible with work, socialising and photographs than fixed braces would be.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Invisalign fix my overbite completely?

For mild to moderate overbites in adults, usually yes. For severe or skeletal cases, it may improve but not fully resolve the issue without additional treatment. Your consultation and 3D scan will give an accurate answer.

Is Invisalign as effective as braces?

For many cases, yes — modern Invisalign with attachments and elastics can achieve results comparable to fixed braces. For some complex cases, fixed braces still give the orthodontist finer control. It genuinely depends on the case.

Will I need attachments?

Almost certainly, for overbite correction. Attachments look like small tooth-coloured bumps, and they're what allow the aligners to make the specific movements required.

How much does Invisalign cost in Shepperton?

Cost varies with case complexity and the number of aligners required. We'll always provide a written estimate at your consultation, and 0% or low-interest finance options are available for most cases.

Will I need retainers forever?

Yes — night-only wear for the long term. This is true for all orthodontic treatment. Without retainers, teeth slowly drift back over the years, undoing the work.

Can I get Invisalign if I've had braces before?

Yes, and it's a common scenario — orthodontic relapse over the years often responds beautifully to a modest course of Invisalign to re-align things.
